The growing size of our plates is partly responsible for overeating. It is proven that you will eat more from a larger plate. The space on your plate does not grow in linear but in exponential fashion – e.g. a plate 20 cm/8 in diameter does not provide twice, but 4.5 more surface area than a plate of 10 cm/4 in diameter.

In the past 50 years, the waist circumference of the adult population in the developed countries grew disproportionately to other parts of the body. Waist to hip ratio is not only a beauty marker, but is also a better indicator of metabolic health than BMI. Women’s waist to hip ratio should, ideally, be near 0.7, men’s close to 0.9.
